Pain medicine reports are used when pain outlasts the injury that caused it and becomes the main part of the claim. That covers chronic pain after road traffic collisions and workplace accidents, complex regional pain syndrome, persistent back and neck pain, neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia raised in a claimant's history, and chronic pain following surgery in clinical negligence cases. A consultant in pain medicine can say whether the reported pain fits a recognised condition, how far it can be explained by the injury, and what treatment and outcome are realistic. Because pain is subjective and hard to measure, this evidence often decides how the parties and the court view the severity and duration of a claimant's ongoing symptoms.

Specialist registration means the expert has completed the recognised training and works day to day with chronic and complex pain. For the court, that grounds the opinion in current specialist practice rather than general familiarity with the subject.
Causation separated from prior health
Many claimants with chronic pain had earlier episodes of back pain, arthritis or degenerative change before the incident. The report separates the pain the accident caused from pain that was already present or would have developed regardless. Setting medical causation out this clearly matters most in pain claims, where the argument is usually about how much of the ongoing pain the defendant is responsible for.

Pain claims turn on what happens next, not only on the current picture. The report explains which treatments are still open, from physiotherapy and medication to injections and pain management programmes, and what recovery each might bring. It also gives a view on whether the pain is likely to settle, persist or worsen, which the parties need before they can value future care and loss.
